LG has announced it will start production of DVD-R media in Korea. It will be able to produce 6 million discs a year.
The electronics firm said yesterday that it will commence operation of a DVD-R production line at its factory in Chongju with an annual production capacity of six million copies, the largest annual production capacity in Korea. |
DVD-R is an optical storage medium that has a large memory capacity of 4.7 gigabytes, nearly seven-fold that of the recordable compact disc (CD-R), and users can replay stored images or data with DVD players or computers.
The company said that although there are other manufacturers producing DVD- Rs in Korea, LGE is the first electronics firm to manufacture the product on an exclusive production line.
LGE said global DVD-R demand has soared following the increasing distribution of DVD players, and the global DVD-R market is expected to reach 80 million units this year, more than four fold that of 2001.
It said has invested some 40 billion won into research and development in the optical disc sector since its debut in 1996, and is currently pursuing development of a high density disc with a memory storage capacity of over 23 gigabytes.
Well let's hope that if more companies will start producing DVD-R's, the less expensive they'll become. But on the other hand, there is still no standard for DVD-R, so I would still wait buying a DVD-R drive.
