I started once with my 2 speed recorder, and now we are at the point that 32x CD-RW reviews will be coming out. CDRlabs has posted a review of the Lite-On 32/12/40. Lite-On is known for their very well performing drives (especially when it comes to backing up copy protected CD's) at a low cost.
The drive has SmartX and Smartburn to detect the right write speeds for the inserted media and to prevent buffer underruns. The drive comes with Ahead's Nero.
Part of conclusion: |
So what did I think about the LTR-32123S? I really think Lite-On has a winner here. The drive's performance is excellent. As a reader, it;s one of the fastest CD-RW drives I've tested. When reading pressed and CD-R media it consistently exceeded 40x and while its CD-RW reading was a little slower than some other drives, it was a huge improvement over the LTR-24102B. The drive's DAE performance was also quite good. Even with the slow startups, it had some very good scores. Just don't try to extract any audio from scratched or dirty discs with this drive. You'll end up with a ton of errors. I'm hoping that Lite-On tweaks this in a future firmware update.
And then you have the drive's writing performance. I'm sure that most of you are here to see what I thought about this aspect of the drive. To be honest, it was not as impressive as it could have been. Even with its average writing speed of 26.23x, the LTR-32123S was not much faster than many of the 24x writers. On the other hand, the drive's rewriting performance is great. Its 12x rewriting speed give it the advantage over most writers, including many of the upcoming 32x writers from other companies.
Of course it's up to you if you really need a faster burner. I guess if you have a 24/10/40 Lite-On you won't need to upgrade to this baby.
