Lite-On LXR-24101A 24/10/40 USB 2.0 CD-RW review @ CDRlabs.com

CDRlabs has reviewed another drive, Lite-On's LXR-24101A 24/10/40 USB 2.0 CD-RW. This USB2.0 drive is not just the Lite-On 24/10/40 model packed in an external case, it's as CDRlabs calls it: "a lean, mean writing machine".

The drive performs pretty well and is less expensive then his two competitors, a model from TDK and a model from Plextor. The drive however didn't perform well on every area:

Part of conclusion:

The LXR-24101A isn't just about good looks. Like Lite-On's internal drives, it has performance that rivals anything from the competition. In our tests, the drive had no problems reading pressed and CD-R media at speeds up to 40x and had some pretty good seek times. When doing DAE, the LXR-24101A also did pretty well. The drive was able to rip audio at 40x and was able to go head to head with the drives from Plextor and TDK. Unfortunately, the LXR-24101A didn't do well in a few of our reading tests. Probably the biggest shock for me was that the drive could only read CD-RW media at 16x CLV. While 40x CD-RW reading speeds would have been ideal, I would have even welcomed a maximum speed of 32x. Lite-On's external drive did perform pretty well in our writing and rewriting tests. The LXR-24101A was able to go neck and neck with the drives from TDK and Plextor and had no problems writing to a variety of different discs.

Of course Lite-On has also packed the LXR-24101A full of features. Along with a 2MB buffer, Lite-On's SMART-Burn technology worked very well to prevent buffer underruns. The USB 2.0 interface made the drive very easy to install and offers some very impressive performance. Lite-On also offers optional FireWire and PCMCIA cables to give you even more connection options
