Over at our friends from CDRLabs.com we can find a review of a slim Lite-On DVD-ROM drive. This drive, with the codename LSD-081, can read DVD's at 8X and read CD's at 24X. Besides that this drive is one of the first drives that supports all of the current writable and re-writable DVD formats including DVD+R and DVD+RW:
Like most people, I used to associate slim drives with mediocre performance. The only time I would use the drive in a laptop would be to install a new program or restore my OS. I rarely, if ever, used the drive to rip audio CD's. With the LSD-081, Lite-On has changed my outlook on slim drives. They have taken the same level of performance and features found in their desktop DVD-ROM drives and fit them into a compact design. |
In our tests the LSD-081 performed very well. When reading pressed and CD-R discs, the drive had no problems reaching 24x and had some pretty good seek times. What really blew me away was the drive's DAE speeds. Where most slim drives have a maximum DAE speed somewhere between slow and even slower, the LSD-081 was able to reach speeds of 24x. This is faster than what a lot of desktop DVD-ROM drives can do! The LSD-081 also did very well in our DVD-ROM tests. The drive had no problems reaching 8x with all of our test media including DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW discs.
