@MAX Tray Player for notification tray or by start button

I suppose some people are sick and tired of the tiny notification tray getting all cluttered up. I even get a bit upset when certain apps *cough* Quicktime *cough* wind up in there waving at me. Also, I'm pretty much enamored with Winamp 5 and all its bells and whistles. But, the thing is with Winamp, I can never get the darn thing set in a good place. Even when I try to stick it up in the title bar it gets annoying every now and again as it seems to get in the way even there.

Well, here is what I think is a pretty cool little freeware player, that makes a place for itself way the heck out of my way in the tray. You say you can't deal with any more tray action, how about under the start button? Man this is great...I like it! Even though it's tiny, all the controls are right there and handy as pockets on a shirt. Be warned, the version I am using is an Alpha build, but I've used it on two completely different systems with no problemo! Your mileage may vary of course.

To select files or whole folders for playing there are traditional choices such as open file dialog, drag'n'drop, explorer context menu as well as Tray Player special feature - My Media. One can just set the path to folders which contain media files and access their contents including subfolders directly from the popup menu.

In the process of playing Tray Player displays information about file being played including: play time, title and artist in the small floating window. One can adjust the transparency of this window or just hide it.

Tray Player features flexible user settings. One can change player position in the taskbar, buttons displayed, etc.

Ever popular skin support is there too.

Tray Player can play audio, video and other multimedia files in the most popular formats, including:

  • Windows Audio Files (wav, snd, au…)
  • MPEG Audio Files (mp3, mp2, mpa…)
  • MIDI Files (mid, midi, rmi…)
  • MPEG Video Files (mpeg ,mpg, m1v, mpe…)
  • Windows Media Files (wm, wma, wmv, asf…)
  • Windows Video Files (avi)
  • Audio CDs (cda)
  • Playlist Files (pls, m3u)

Multimedia formats support depend on specific codecs installed in the user operating system.

As you can see from the options shot above, this little player has a lot of features, yet it's just a 830 K file. You can see what's new in the version by visiting this page, which also gives you some more idea of it's power. Then head on over to the @MAX Software page and snag a download if you want to give it a try. Finally, I just have to say kudos to the author of this player,
it's cool.
