Maxell to stop production of Optical Media

Maxell has announced that it will end its production of all optical media including CD-R/RW, DVD, Blu-ray and HD DVD discs at the end of March.  Some may know Maxell for its 12x DVD-RAM media that can only be obtained in Japan or stores that import this from Japan.

Going by the Japanese source, its employees from the disc division will be transferred to a new division in its restructuring process due to take place on April 1st.  Maxell will continue to sell optical discs under its own Maxell brand, however, its discs will be fully sourced from both domestic and overseas OEM providers.

It will be interesting to see what OEM provider will provide it with 12x DVD-RAM media.  Otherwise this could also mean the end of 12x DVD-RAM production, unless another manufacturer begins producing it.

Thanks to koba for providing us with this news.  Further info can be read on these Japnese sources:  Impress Watch and Maxell.
