Our friends from CDRLabs.com have done another review. This time they took a look at the Memorex True 8x DVD±RW, which is based on the Pioneer DVR-107D DVD±RW. The Memorex True 8x DVD±RW features 8x DVD±R and 4x DVD±RW writing speeds as well as 24x CD writing and rewriting speeds. The Memorex True 8x DVD±RW can read CDs at 40x speed.
| Part of the conclusion: Memorex has come through with another impressive drive. Based on one of the more popular 8x DVD±RW drives currently available, it offers good looks, fast DVD writing speeds and long list of features. Unfortunately, there were also a few things that kept it from getting top marks in our review. Like the Pioneer drive its based on, the True 8x can write to both DVD-R and DVD+R media at 8x. While not as fast as some of the other drives we've reviewed, it was able to write 4GB of data in as little as 8 minutes. This is pretty impressive. However, the True 8x could probably be faster. For some reason, it took longer than normal to complete its calibration tests and write the lead out. This extra time was most apparent when writing at 4x. At this speed, the True 8x was actually slower than most of the 4x DVD writers we've tested, including Memorex's own Dual-X. Also keep in mind that the True 8x doesn't have the ability to write to 4x DVD±R media at 8x. Unless you want to void your warranty with a hacked firmware, you will need to buy media rated at this speed. |
CDRlabs.com gave this drive 9 out of 10 possible
points. The Memorex True 8x DVD±RW is available for about $ 150 on Pricegrabber. They have included a note from Memorex in their review, that states
that the price of the Memorex True 8x DVD±RW will drop down to about $ 129.99 in
April. You can read the whole review over at CDRLabs.com.
