MetaMachine to pay $30mil to RIAA and cease distribution

Another one bites the dust. New York-based MetaMachine Inc., producer of some of the most popular file sharing applications, along with seven other technology firms, were warned last fall by the RIAA to shut down or face legal consequences. Well, they didn't and now they are. MetaMachine, the company behind  eDonkey, eDonkey 2000, Overnet and other software versions, have agreed to pay the RIAA 30 million dollars restitution to avoid further legal entanglements and also have agreed to stop all distribution of their programs.

"With this new settlement, another domino falls, and we have further strengthened the footing of the legal marketplace," Mitch Bainwol, chairman and chief executive of the Recording Industry Association of America, said in a statement.

Under terms of the latest agreement, MetaMachine and its top executives, Sam Yagan and Jed McCaleb, agreed to immediately cease distributing eDonkey, eDonkey 2000, Overnet and other software versions.

The company also agreed to take measures to prevent file-sharing by people using previously downloaded versions of the eDonkey software.

Supposedly, (I don't have this software on my computer or none of my friends -really!!)  If you are running the eDonkey application, then you are now shown a message to visit the site. If you visit the eDonkey website, then you receive a warning message and your IP is logged. Then, the automatic uninstall of the program is invoked. Nice.

Maybe someone that uses eDonkey could verify this for us. The warning message is real, I visited there. It did log my IP as well.

The eDonkey2000 Network is no longer available.
