In order to solve these issues, users have to provide the scammers access to their computer and make a payment. There are also variants in which popups and advertisements are used that warn for computer issues or that try to convince users to call the 'helpdesk' of a tech company to trick them into calling the scammers themselves.

According to Microsoft are people behind the scams often American companies that use foreign call centers to trick internet users.
