Microsoft: No Zune gaming unit coming soon

Even though Microsoft continues to publicly deny the possible development of an Xbox handheld unit designed for mobile gamers, there are still dozens of reports and articles published regarding the possibility.

The recent round of speculation involves a Microsoft employee who wishes to remain anonymous, stating that a new "digital entertainment handheld" is currently being developed by Microsoft.

Reportedly called xYz by the Microsoft research and development team, there aren't very many solid details regarding the device.  It reportedly has a WVGA touchscreen while using hardware not currently offered in the PSP or DS.  Furthermore, it's likely any Microsoft gaming unit would have built in Wi-Fi access so gamers can download new game content from any where.

I'd honestly look forward to hearing details of a Microsoft-created portable unit, even though I absolutely have a blast playing DS.  Although its Xbox 360 game console hasn't been able to overtake the Nintendo Wii -- and the Zune MP3 player still can't crack the dominance of Apple iPod -- it'd be interesting to see what Microsoft is able to develop.

There have been many rumors of a possible Zune phone, but I'm doubtful Microsoft is interested in creating phone hardware, as its Windows Mobile OS remains popular among several handset manufacturers.

I've e-mailed Microsoft regarding these rumors, but am doubtful of receiving a response from their press team.

Both Sony and Nintendo, who are known for home consoles, have handheld console units, which have proven to be popular among consumers.  There is still plenty of money to be made on the mobile gaming market, and Microsoft likely won't neglect the market for much longer.

Would the availability of a Microsoft handheld make you think twice before purchasing the PSP or DS?
