Microsoft today released its Zune HD media player, opening up a new chapter in the company's continued efforts to compete with the Apple iPod.
Initial reviews from owners have been mixed, with some owners applauding Microsoft for the Zune HD's screen and user interface, while others appreciate the 720p HD output, on-demand music, and the NVIDIA Tegra technology used in the Zune. Furthermore, the touch screen and Internet capability shows Microsoft is going directly after the popular iPod Touch device, and consumers have loved similar features.
Despite some positive feedback, there also have been just as many negative reviews of the device. Several owners complain that the Zune HD Marketplace still doesn't offer a wide variety of content, nor can third-party developers create apps for the Zune.
Although CNET and several other larger news sites have published Zune HD reviews, I'd advise anyone waiting to see additional reviews to wait until smaller news sites begin to publish their work.
I haven't gotten my hands on the Zune HD yet, but will be purchasing one next week. I'll be able to take a closer look at the device then, and already see a number of features I'll like using -- and a few that I wish the device had. Have you purchased a Zune HD?
