Microsoft is working on a service that allows streaming of apps and games from the cloud, according to ZDNet. It's unclear when Arcadia, as the service is called, will become available, Microsoft is currently looking for additional team members to work on the project.
The technology is currently in development by a relative new team, according to Microsoft watcher Mary Jo Foley on ZDNet. In a job posting Microsoft states it's looking for an additional team member for project Arcadia. The company calls Arcadia 'the next big thing for Microsoft' in the posting in which it also writes that applicants with iOS and Android experience have an advantage. That could indicate the service will not be solely available for Windows.
At first Microsoft would have planned to stream Android apps and games to Windows devices, but according to Foley it appears Microsoft changed its plans. It's unclear what Microsoft currently exactly plans for the service, it's possible that Microsoft wants to run complex software on thin clients. However it could just as well proceeding with its initial plan.
Foley doesn't expect that Microsoft will release more information about the project soon. Likely the company will announce more after the introduction of Windows 10 next year. Microsoft is looking to offer more services to monetize its Windows ecosystem, Arcadia fits that objective.
The name Arcadia is likely based on a colony in the game Halo. Microsoft teams have a habit of using code names based on Halo game elements lately.
