Netflix will release major updates for its Smart TV and console apps which haven't been updated since 2013. The streaming video service announced this on its blog today. When selecting a title in the new app, the video is automatically started or resumed while a menu remains visible. While the video starts to play it's still possible to change settings or to skip to another episode.

"Video is a rich medium for storytelling and we've found bringing video playback into the content selection experience makes it easier to find something great to watch", Netflix writes. The change was already announced in March and has been tested by a group of Netflix users. The update will become available to
The updates start rolling tut globally today, and will become available on eligible devices over the following days. It's unclear what exactly these 'eligible' devices will be.
