Next-gen HD by 2020

On Sunday Super Hi-Vision, developed by NHK, was exhibited at IBC 2008 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Super Hi-Vision is expected to be the next generation in high-definition and will really roll-out as a consumer service in twelve years from now.

Super Hi-Vision (SHV) was conceived for the first time in the late '90s, demonstrated in 2002 and first promised for 2025. With the new promise being 2020 many believe that the R&D support from BBC, RAI and the EBU is very important.

"NHK's goal is for Super Hi-Vision to be enjoyed in every home," said Dr. Keiichi Kubota, project leader at NHK. "It is our responsibility to show broadcasters and network operators that it is not just a dream but a real future television system."

"I think Dr Kubota is probably right about the 12-year programme, because although the transmission demo shows NHK has come a long way we still have prototype cameras and projector systems," Dr. John Zubrzycki from BBC added. "And of course the big thing to wait for is the full 8k resolution of domestic displays."
