Microsoft Seminar at MSU

Microsoft speaks to college students once again about Xbox. Get all of the details inside.

Microsoft recently held a seminar at Michigan State University, where it spoke to students regarding Xbox. While few new details were revealed, Microsoft reaffirmed the spec sheet while confirming a few rumors.

Firstly, Microsoft addressed the fact that the Windows 2000 kernel and drivers will take up less than 3 MB of RAM. A message board posting on halo.bungie.org from a student who attended the seminar quoted the presenter as saying, "(Xbox) won't 'bluescreen' because, like a Mac, we know what hardware will be inside."

The built in 3D user interface will be presented when there is no game disc, DVD movie, or audio CD in the system, much like the PlayStation 2's and Dreamcast's user interface. All applications run at Ring 0, giving the software complete control over system resources.

It was also revealed that Xbox will, in fact, employee some type of parental lock, allowing parents to set a maximum tolerable ESRB rating. Any games rated higher than the set rating won't play without a password.

Other details reported by those who attended the seminar...

No support for DivX or MPEG4.

There will be 800 components in each Xbox.

Console and games will be priced competitively.

One million square foot manufacturing floor with 28 assembly lines.

175,000 Xboxes will be produced each week.

We will just have to wait for a 3rdparty Player.
If the Xbox OS is as crackable as Windows 95/98/ME/2000/XP then there will be no problems adding Divx.
