Our friends from
CDRLabs.com have posted a review of a Nu Tech DVD recorder. Nu Tech is a
new brand in the optical storage industry. They were founded in May of this year
but as a subsidiary of Quanta Storage, they do have a lot of experience. Nu
Tech's flagship product is the DDW-081 drive which CDRLabs.com has taken a look
at. The DDW-081 supports 8x DVD+R recording and 4x DVD+RW recording speeds.

 As a relatively new name in the world of optical storage, I went
into this review not really knowing what to expect from Nu Tech. Needless
to say, they have made a good first impression with the DDW-081. While a
little rough around the edges in some areas, their new DVD+RW drive offers
impressive performance and a healthy dose of features, all at an
affordable price.
If you're looking for a fast DVD writer, the DDW-081
definitely won't disappoint. With its 8x DVD+R and 4x DVD+RW writing
speeds, Nu Tech's new drive is one of the fastest DVD writers currently
available. The drive burned DVD+R discs in record time, beating out our
current champ, the Plextor PX-708A, by a few seconds. The DDW-081 did not
have the annoying slowdowns we saw with the PX-708A either. However, the
number of PI/PO errors did have a tendency spike in one area on discs
recorded at 8x. The DDW-081 was also performed relatively well when
writing to DVD+RW media. Unfortunately, it trailed behind some of the
other drives in our tests.
While priced affordably, the Nu Tech's new DVD+RW drive has many
features found on more expensive writers. To prevent buffer underruns, the
DDW-081 has 2MB buffer that is backed up by Seamless Link technology.
While the buffer was a little smaller than we'd like, this system worked
very well to prevent coasters. Like Plextor's new DVD writer, the DDW-081
can also write to select 4x DVD+R media at 8x. With 8x DVD+R media just
starting to ship, this is a feature that many will appreciate.
Unfortunately, the DDW-081 is lacking support for the Mt. Rainier format.
This was a little surprising seeing it was one of the features listed on
the box and Nu Tech's website. According to Nu Tech, support for this
feature will be added by the end of December via a firmware update.

The best thing about the Nu Tech DDW-081 DVD recorder is
probably its price. The drive can be bought online for as low as US$ 132!
Because the Nu Tech drive is very cheap and offers pretty good performance it
