Most consumers are well familiar with portable boom boxes and CD-Radio Cassette recorders, however wouldn't it be handy to have an equivalent for playing DVDs and other video sources also? Well, Optoma Technology has unveiled a portable home cinema projector known as its MovieTime Digital DVD Projector. This incorporates a DLP projector, DVD player and audio all in a single unit, which can be carried about and used like a portable stereo, assuming there is a white (or near white) blank wall handy.
The unit features a native 16:9 widescreen image as well as a direct digital path between the DVD to the DLP without scaling or analogue to digital conversion along the path, thus giving a distortion-free image with accurate colour rendering. The projector features a high Contrast Ratio of 4000:1, 1000 lumen rating, short-throw lens and an image size up to 335" (~8.5 Metres).
The projector can also be connected up to other sources for video playback besides DVD, such as a games console for big-screen gaming, a VCR or a HDTV or VGA source up to 1400 x 1050 (scaled down to its 848 x 480 native resolution). The unit also features up to 7.1 surround sound using a suitable surround sound system connected to its digital optical out.

MovieTime is designed for a wide range of home entertainment options, from watching the latest DVD movie releases to hooking it up to a gaming console to play the latest, hottest gaming titles on a large screen with friends and family. Because of MovieTime's integrated digital DVD player and speakers, as well as its short-throw lens, it is easy to turn any room in the house into an instant screening room -- right out of the box. "Optoma's MovieTime Digital DVD projector changes the home entertainment landscape by helping people instantly create a home theater in just about any room in the house," said Ralph Merrem, director of product management of Optoma Technology Inc. "MovieTime is a simple, plug-and-play product, giving a way for movie fans to quickly and easily create their own home theater environment with a built-in DVD player and speakers and a native 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio." |
With a RRP of $1,499, it is not cheapest projector around, but then again it would be handy for carrying about between houses such as to a friend's house to play games or watch movies on. Then again, it is still cheaper and more portable than most other big screen televisions such as Plasma, LCD and rear-projection.
