Our friends from CDRLabs have taken a look at the OptoRite DD1205, one of the few 12x DVD recorders that is currently available. The drive writes DVD+R discs at 12x and DVD-R discs at 8x. DVD-RW and DVD+RW are supported at up to 4x and the drive has also the ability to write to DVD+R dual layer discs. OptoRite drive usually support Sanyo's HD-Burn and this drive is no exception. CDRLabs did some extensive testing on the drive and the conclusion is pretty positive in general, but the drive has some rough spots:
With a drive like the DD1205, things like writing quality and media compatibility are just as important as speed. Thankfully, finding compatible media wasn't a problem. The drive has the ability to write to 4x DVD+R media at 8x and, while the list is short, it can even write to some 8x DVD+R media at 12x. Unfortunately, the DD1205's writing quality could have been better as there were a number of cases where the PI/PIF errors got very high. Hopefully, OptoRite can tweak this in a future firmware update. OptoRite's new DVD±RW drive performed pretty well in our DVD read tests. While not the fastest drive to come through the 'Labs, the DD1205 read single layer data and video DVD-ROM's at speeds near 12x and had some good seek times. It also read DVD±R discs at an impressive 11.8x, but slowed to about 8x when reading DVD±RW and DVD+R DL media. |
If you are in the market for a 12x drive, or if you are intrested in reading about optical storage drives in general then don't hesitate and head over to CDRLabs to read entire review and conclusion! We also would like to encourage you to discuss this drive in our Recording Hardware Forum.
