Philips DVDRW228 DVD+R/+RW review @ CDRlabs.com

Again a review from our friends of CDRLabs who have taken a look at the Philips DVDRW228 this time. This drive uses the DVD+ format and writes them at 2.4x. Besides that it is able to write CDs at 12x, CD-RWs at 10x, read back CDs 32x and DVD-ROMs at 8x.

Here is a part of the conclusion of a drive that does what it promises, but doesn't seem to be someting special.

Part of conclusion:

When it comes to writing CD's, the DVDRW228 won't win any speed contests. However, its 12x writing and 10x rewriting speeds are more than adequate if you need to write an occasional CD or two. The DVDRW228 really shines when it comes to writing DVD's. The drive was able to write about 4GB to a DVD+RW disc in a little over 20 minutes thanks to its 2.4x writing speeds. Writing the same amount of data to a DVD+R disc took a couple of minutes longer due to some additional finalizing but this is still much faster than any of the DVD-R drives currently available.

Most of the DVD+RW drives we've looked at have been very similar to Ricoh's reference designs. While manufacturers might give their drive a new bezel, that's usually as far as they go. Philips, on the other hand, has improved upon this design by giving the DVDRW228 not one, but three cool looking LED's and incorporating their own Seamless Link coaster protection and Thermo-Balanced Writing technology. I was also very impressed by the software package that came with the DVDRW228. Philips has included a variety of popular video editing and writing software that should be more than adequate for most people.
