Philips PCRW4012 (40/12/48) review @ CDRLabs.com

Our friends from CDRLabs have taken a look at one of Philips' latest recorders, the PCRW4012 drive. With speeds of 40X writing and 12X re-writing it's certainly no speed monster but the drive does have some good features on board. Here's part of CDRLabs' conclusion:

I went into this review not really knowing what to expect. While Philips' DVD+RW drives are some of my personal favorites, it's been awhile since I've taken a look at one of their CD-RW drives. What I found was a consumer friendly drive with an impressive list of features. However, there were a few things that kept it from being a top performer.

As a reader, the PCRW4012 had no problems reading pressed and CD-R discs at 48x, but, like a lot of other writers, the drive had to slow down to read CD-RW discs. In the case of the PCRW4012, its speeds were limited to 32x. The PCRW4012's DAE speeds were better than I expected. In our tests, the drive was able to rip audio CD's at 48x without breaking a sweat. When it came to writing CD's, the PCRW4012 had very few problems. However, its Z-CLV technology kept it from being one of the fastest 40x writers we've tested. The drive's rewriting performance was another story though. While it was able to rewrite at 12x with software like Nero, its packet writing speeds were limited to only 10x.

The Philips PCRW4012 drive gets an overall score of 7. The entire review can be read here.
