Although the Sony Playstation 2 has been the market leader when it comes to game consoles, Sony is prepared to take the risk of expecting consumers to fork out a hefty of price of US$400 on the new Playstation 3. Despite the high price tag, Sony will still lose around US$100 for each sale of the console as a result of the expensive components that make it up.
Sony Computer Entertainment Boss Ken Kutaragi reckons that anyone who wants the console will pay any price to get their hands on one, even if it means taking up a 2nd job to save up for it.
Sony's decision to go with Blu-ray has resulted in this being the main component that takes up a bulk of the console's price. Then again, not only will this give a huge capacity for game developers to develop high definition games, but will also allow the Playstation 3 to double up as a Blu-ray movie player.

Securities firm Merrill Lynch revealed recently it figures the PS3 will come out at a retail price of $400 US, which would likely see it sell for closer to $500 Cdn. Merrill Lynch analysts said even at that rather steep price, Sony will initially lose $100 US on each console sale, thanks to its roster of pricey components. But Sony Computer Entertainment boss Ken Kutaragi says you'll buy PS3 at any price -- even if you have to get a second job at Burger King to pay for it. |
While I can easily see serious Playstation fans forking out for one of these, the drawback will be that it would not make an ideal gift for the holiday season going by the price. The advantage of being able to double up as a Blu-ray movie player will surely help boost the Blu-ray market, however should the Xbox 360 take on HD DVD, the Blu-ray side boost by the Playstation 3 would be lost.
