PLDS enters in the Qflix club

It seems that the Qflix family is growing larger every day. According to a press release published at Sonic, now also PLDS (Philips & Lite-On Digital Solutions Corp.) has joined the club signing a Qflix technology and IP licensing agreement. PLDS is integrating Qflix technology into a range of optical disc drives planned for release this year that will enable downloaded movies and video programs to be recorded to DVD with Content Scramble System (CSS) encryption.

In addition to DVD-RW drives, PLDS also plans to release Qflix Blu-ray Disc Combo drives that will offer Blu-ray Disc playback and DVD video recording.

The most interesting part of the announce is the following line:

The royalty-bearing Qflix licensing program for media and optical drive manufacturers... blah bla blah...

The translation it is very simple: it is another way to force end-users to pay for royalties about totally unnecessary things forcibly embedded on DVD media.
