Plextor PX-716 DVD-R DL beta firmware available

franz99 used our news submit to tell us that on the Plextor Japan website a beta firmware for the
Plextor PX-716 DVD recorder can be found. This firmware allows users to burn
DVD-R dual layer discs at 2 speed. Plextor Japan warns that this is a beta
firmware and therefor doesn't guarantee that one will be able to actually burn
DVD-R dual layer discs.

The firmware also disables SecuRec, GigaRec and VariRec. In mid. January 2005 the final version of this firmware should become available. Besides this warning, the Plextor Japan website states the following, translated with Babelfish:

As for this firmware, because it is a beta stage, sufficient verification is not done.
Please utilize this firmware on your own responsibility.
Assuming, that after the updating to this firmware, damage to the data and the hardware occurred, at Plextor Japan does not compensate any possible damages.
Plextor does not give support on this questions about this firmware by phone and/or email

Still there will always be CD Freaks who want to be the first to burn a DVD-R dual layer disc with this drive (once they found a disc) or for whatever other reason.
