Windows 7 is still the most popular operating system in the world, but the OS rapidly loses marketshare to Windows 8.1. Microsoft's latest officially released OS is meanwhile used by almost 25% of all internet users. The numbers come from market research companies StatCounter and Net Applications who both published the information today.
Net Applications reports that Windows 7 lost 0.6% in May, which brings the total number of systems running the OS at 57.7%. Windows XP, still the second most popular Windows OS, lost 1.3% and is now installed on 14.6% of all computers. Windows 8.1 market share has grown with 1.7% bringing the percentage of computers running the OS to 12.9%.
Also StatCounter reports dropping market shares for Windows XP and Windows 7 but the company reports different percentages. Windows 7 lost 0.7%, according to StatCounter, which brings the total number of computers running the OS at 53.1%. The research company reports that Windows XP market share dropped with 0.4% bringing the total to 10.5%. W
While Net Applications reports a strong growth for Windows 8.1, StatCounter reports an increase of only 0.2% bringing the total to 16%.
