Researchers create lab on DVD - normal DVD reader detects HIV

Swedish researchers have modified a consumer grade DVD reader into a bio-scanner. This way the scientists were able to analyse blood and tissue samples. They were also able to see if cells were infected with HIV.

The reseachers of the Swedish School of Biotechnology used the DVD reader and modified discs to analyze organic samples. By modifying the laser inside the DVD-ROM drive they were able to create a laser scanning microscope with the capability to deliver high-resolution images down to 1 μm in size.

The system consists of a multi-layered disposable polymer disc and a modified commercial DVD reader with rotational control for sample handling, temperature control for optimized bioassay, a photodiode array for detection, and software for signal processing and user interface

The samples are put on the polymer disc and using the laser of the drive the researchers are able to detect cell types that are involved in e.g. HIV infections. The researchers also see opportunities for otther tests.

Currently available equipment used to achieve the same is far more expensive and cost ten thousands of Euros. Because the Swedish researchers use cheap, commercially available components it can be used in developing countries. The Lab on DVD can be made for about 200 Euros, is easy to use and delivers results in a couple of minutes.
