Samsung announced a new line of solid-state drives that include a higher-level of data encryption, making it the first SSD product available using government-grade data encryption, the company proclaims.
The new line of SSDs use AES 256-bit encryption to protect the SSDs, and includes Samsung's own proprietary software. Samsung’s new corporate SSDs offer read speeds up to 250MB/s and write speeds of 220 MB/s, while also weighing 25% less than a regular HDD.
With the addition of this self-encrypting technology, Samsung promotes overall data drive performance compared to HDDs and other SSDs using encryption software.

"Faster and more secure than its predecessor, our new corporate-focused SSD is the only one with self-encryption built on the TCG Opal standard that's available on the market today," noted Jim Elliott, Samsung VP of memory marketing, in a statement.
As SSD development increased in popularity, there was early concern among analysts that Samsung would miss out on SSDs in favor of HDTVs and other electronics. Instead, Samsung has continued to promote both HDDs and SSDs, with both products categories expected to receive new products next year.
The South Korean company is one of the current SSD market leaders, with the company continually looking to expand its SSD catalog.
As consumers carry information on portable HDDs, notebooks, flash drives, and other portable electronics, many people don't encrypt their information. Even if sensitive information isn't being shared, the fast ability to encrypt information should not be avoided by casual consumers.
If people are uncomfortable encrypting their own information, various flash drives and portable products are also available.
