Kenshin lets us know that he spotted a new review over at our friends from CDRLabs.com. This time they've taken a look at Samsung's combo drive, the SM-348B. This combo drive can read and write at 48x, re-write at 24x and can play DVDs at 16x:
Samsung's engineers didn't sit back and enjoy their success. This November, Samsung announced a new combo drive with even faster reading and writing speeds. Dubbed the SM-348B, this new combo drive goes where none have gone before. Using MediaTek's new combo drive chipset, the SM-348B features 48x CD reading and writing speeds, 24x rewriting speeds and a huge 8MB buffer. Of course, no combo drive would be complete without the ability to read DVD's. The SM-348B's 16x DVD read speeds are some of the fastest available. |
Part of the Conclusion:
If I had to sum up my impressions of the SM-348B in two words they would be "kick ass". Samsung's engineers have truly worked some magic here. The SM-348B has all of the features we've come to expect from Samsung along with performance that rivals most of the CD-RW and DVD-ROM drives out there.
When it came to writing CD's, Samsung's new combo drive had some of the fastest writing times we've seen on a 48x writer. In our writing tests, the SM-348B came within a few seconds of some of the fastest 48x writers we've tested and was actually a little faster than the 52x writer from ASUS. The drive's media compatibility was also very good. The SM-348B was able to write at 48x to a variety of media while keeping the writing errors to a minimum. This performance also carried over to our rewriting tests. As the first combo drive to feature 24x rewriting speeds, the SM-348B had no problems trouncing the drives from the competition.
So CDRLabs.com was quite impressed with this Samsung combo drive. The drive's price is also very interesting since it has a suggested retail price of only $129. It's thus no surprise that the drive gets CDRLab's Editor's Choice Award. Read the complete review here.
