Sanyo has announced a new LSI
chipset, the LC897491, which supports 12x DVD+R, 8x DVD-R, 8x DVD±RW, 52x
CD-R and 32x CD-RW write speeds. The chipset also supports Sanyo's HD-BURN and
BURN-Proof technologies as well as reading of 16x DVD-ROM, 52x CD-ROM and 2x
DVD-RAM. One of the drives that will utilize the LC897491 chipset is the new Plextor
PX-712A.
Sanyo will start sample shipments
of the LC897491 this month for a price of 2000 yen (~US$ 18) and volume
production will begin next quarter. At the end of year Sanyo expects to have a
new chipset ready that supports 16x DVD write speed. A Babelfish translated
