Seagate started the week by announcing a line up of enterprise storage HDD drives aimed at reducing power consumption in the data center.
The company announced the 2.5-inch Constellation and 3.5-inch Constellation ES hard drives -- both drives will be SATA, though they will also have a serial-attached SCSI interface available. The Constellation is the HDD that has reportedly reached the 2TB storage platform, Seagate said.
Both HDDs are four-platter drives that rotate at 7,200 RPM, with 16GB cache on the SAS model and 32GB cache on the SATA model.
The Constellation line will have HDDs with 160GB and 500GB storage capacities, while the Constellation ES drives will have 500GB, 1TB and 2TB storage capacities.
"The need for greater storage capacity will continue to expand in multiple directions and dimensions, but there will be an increasing scrutiny of all storage system purchases, with an eye to decreasing power consumption, footprint, and cost per GB in unprecedented ways," Gartner researcher John Monroe said in a statement.
Seagate didn't release pricing or release dates for the new HDDs.
