Sennheiser has announced a headphone developed for their 70th birthday that has a MSRP of $55,000 (€50,000). The headset is called "Orpheus" and should offer the best possible sound quality, according to the German audio equipment manufacturer.
The headphone is the successor of the Orpheus HE90 which is a similar product released in 1991. Back then the headphone was sold at $16,000 and also at that time Sennheiser promised it produced the best possible sound. The Orpheus H90 came with an amplifier.
Now, 25 years later the company decided its time for a new Orpheus. The headphone is handmade and contains more than 6,000 parts. An unique thing should be its digital amplifier that resides inside the headphone and that should filter any interference from the cable. That combined with 8 digital-to-analog converters should result in the best possible sound quality.
The $55,000 headphone will be available in a limited edition in Q2 2016. Sennheiser has announced only 250 of the Orpheus headphone will be made.
