GristyMcFisty lets us know that some
days ago Sharp Japan posted a press release in which the company announces a new high-speed OPIC light
absorbent element, the GA301TXW1MZ, with which 16x DVD recording should be
possible. According to the information on the Sharp website samples of this
element should begin shipping in the middel of next month and mass
production should be possible at the end of this year:

to the entry to the maximum of 16 time speed with the OPIC which adopts
the process which utilizes individual super high-speed photodiode
technology, developed the OPIC light absorbent element for the record type
DVD which in addition actualizes the miniaturization of past ratio
2/3.
The Sharp press release mentions that 16x writing
should be possible to both DVD-R an DVD+R media. Besides that we can also read
that the new OPIC can handle 60x (?!) CD-R recording speeds and 16x DVD reading.
