Six DVD recorders tested @ Tom's Hardware Guide

Tom's Hardware Guide has posted an article in which they have tested the following six DVD writers, Philips DVDRW228K(DVD+R/ RW), Pioneer DVR-A05 (DVD-R/ RW),Ricoh MP5125A (DVD+R/ RW),

Sony DRU120A (DVD+R/ RW),TEAC DV-W50E (DVD-R/ RW),Sony DRU-500A (DVD-R/ RW and DVD+R/ RW).

According to the several simple tests THG has run, the differences between the recorders are minimal. Of course the choice between DVD- and DVD+ has been simplified by the Sony DRU-500A, which will make the choice a lot easier for many people. The conclusions are however seen more often, DVD-R for data backups, DVD+R for video storage.

You will notice that all the burners in the tests are pretty much equal. Though some models did better in some tests, the differences are minimal for both read and write. We can't even distinguish by price, since the recommended price for each of them is around $300. But we can differentiate two categories of use.

Archiving:

If your main goal is to archive data, the DVD-R format (Pioneer DVR-A05 or TEAC DV-W50E) is the best choice. 4x burn speed gives you your result in 15 minutes. The time saved compared to DVD+R at 2.4x (over 24 minutes) is not to be sneezed at.

Video:

However, if you are more interested in video, the DVD+RW format is still the best solution. It is much more flexible to use and, what's more, it is compatible with Philips home players.

Also noted in the article is that people should not use cheap media, but instead pick a little more expensive DVD recordable disc. This is also in our view a good advice, remember you store 4.7 GB data! Read the entire story here.
