Song industry goes after MP3.com (again??)

A new development in the mp3.com case. A few months ago they joined forces with the record labels after they paid a lot of money. After that they got sued again by some artists. Fortunately for mp3.com Vivendi International bought mp3.com on the 21st may of this year. They paid $372 million for it. And now the song industry goes after MP3.com again...

MP3.com executives were not available for comment. The company was forced to pay out more than $160 million to major labels and publishers to resolve a different copyright suit.

That landmark suit stemmed from a database of more than 80,000 albums that MP3.com created as part of an "online music locker" that allowed people to store music digitally and later access it via any computer connected to the Internet.

The songwriters and publishers involved in the latest suit contend it is the first suit against MP3.com seeking damages for enabling so-called "viral infringements" of about 1,000 songs.

More than 50 music publishers and songwriters filed this lawsuit and it is about 1,000 songs. They want $25,000 a song. An analist from Webnoize said about this: "They're going after MP3.com because Universal has deep pockets..", and I think this is indeed a very true statement...
