Japanese technology giants Sony and Panasonic have announced that they will start the joint development of next-generation OLED (organic light-emitting diode) TVs and their goal is to start mass producing low cost high resolution OLED panels during 2013. They will use a, by Panasonic developed, printing technique to manufacture OLED panels, which is different from current, more expensive techniques used by competitors such as LG and Samsung.
It's an interesting move, as Panasonic has previously mainly focused on plasma screens, of which the technology is losing popularity pretty fast. Sony on the other hand is having overall difficulties and has confirmed that it will lay off about 10k of it's employees this year. It will be interesting to see if both companies are able to fight back in the TV market by working together on these next-generation OLED screens.
