Ian from CDRLabs.com has again wrapped up another review. This time the latest Sony writer, the CRX185A1/C1, has been reviewed:
With its four zones, the CRX185 is a fairly conservative writer. Because of a fairly low average writing speed, the drive's writing times were higher than many of the other 32x writers I've tested. However, like Sony's 24x writer, this CRX185 really shines when it comes to media compatibility. I tested the drive with a wide variety of media from many different manufacturers, and it allowed me to write at 32x with almost all of it. When it came to rewriting, the drive's performance was pretty average. In our tests it trailed behind the other drives by a few seconds, but did pretty well when erasing.
Sony's new CRX185 is also packed full of features. The drive has a good number of writing and rewriting speeds and unlike most of Sony's previous drives, the CRX185 can actually overburn. While the drive's 2MB buffer is not as large as the ones on some other drives, it does have some sort of buffer underrun protection technology backing it up. This buffer underrun protection is not Sony's own Power-Burn technology, but it does work quite well. The CRX185 also includes a great software package including B's Recorder Gold.
