For the second time in less than a couple months, we are able to read that at least Sony is wanting to avoid a format battle like the one we were caught up in with VHS and Betamax. The interesting thing this time around is, it seems that we the conumer, are the ones that are causing the corporate giant to give the thought serious consideration! Last time, with the tape battle, we were the pawns.
| After more than a year of touting Blu-ray as the best technology to replace DVD for storing high-definition video and winning proponents including Apple, a top executive at Sony Corp., one of Blu-ray's major backers, has opened the door to the possibility of unifying the format with its arch rival, HD-DVD. "Listening to the voice of the consumers, having two rival formats is disappointing and we haven't totally given up on the possibility of integration or compromise," Ryoji Chubachi, Sony's president-elect, said at a news conference Thursday in which he discussed the company's performance and future strategy. |
Ken Kutaragi, executive deputy president of Sony, also said that a format war was going to be a bad idea back in January. However, Chubachi's remarks are possibly more important, as he will become the new president of the company this June. You can check out the entire article on this page.
It's a good thing that these men are thinking about some sort of an agreement. Consumers are going to balk at the high cost of adopting either blue laser format, especially if there are no guarantees that we wont be throwing money down the drain by making the "wrong" choice, if one solution is abandoned again. Fool me once, shame on you- fool me twice, well then shame on me.
