Here on Myce.wiki you probably won't find many Sony fans. While the general public knows them from TV's, the Playstation, Walkman and mobile phones, our visitors know Sony from the copy protection SecuRom, rootkits and other Digital Rights Management (DRM) 'solutions' that Sony has brought to the market to try to stop (music) piracy. Of which all miserably failed. But the Japanese tech giant has bigger problems. Press agency Reuters is reporting that Sony will cut 10,000 jobs before March 2013, and that it has revealed where those cuts will be.
The company will lay off 1,800 people at a chemical business it sold to a state-run bank in Japan, 2,000 people will be cut in their headquarters and 2,000 employees in Europe will need to look for a different job due to the end of Sony's joint venture with Ericsson. The rest of the job cuts will be at factories around the world. The layoffs should save the company about $375 million a year which it needs because the company is making losses in TVs and other consumer electronic products.
Sony will now also focus on gaming, digital imaging and mobile devices and also hopes to gain new business by e.g. the development of new medical devices.
