Sony hasn't been very active in the MP3 player market very much the past couple of years, but hopes its latest generation of Walkman players will help attract new users.
The Hong Kong SonyStyle store recently provided additional details regarding Sony's NWZ-X1000-series Walkman MP3 players that have an OLED display.
The snazziest X-Series Walkman uses a 3-inch touchscreen OLED, with the OLED helping reduce the amount of physical buttons needed. The display has a 432 x 240 pixel resolution, and is a QVGA display.
The new device has MP3, WMA, AAC and Linear PCM format support, but won't be able to play DRM-protected songs purchased through the Apple iTunes music store. Sony is including MPEG4 AVC and Windoows Media WMV9 support for videos.
Most interestingly, the NWZ-X1000 has an Internet browser, Podcast Direct Downloader, and also allows users to watch YouTube videos. Although storage capacity has drastically increased over the years, it looks like Sony's latest device will have either 16GB or 32GB of storage space.
Exact pricing and release dates for the device haven't been released publicly by Sony.
The MP3 player market is currently dominated by the Apple iPod, and it should be interested to see if any of Sony's die hard fans will switch from iPods to Walkman MP3 players in the future.
