Sony's overall game sales likely to stick even if PS3 is delayed

It seems like whether or not Sony succeeds in launching its next generation gaming console in March, it will unlikely have much of an effect on Sony's overall game console and title sales.  Even though the PlayStation2  has been out for five years now, Sony is still making hefty profits from this, not to mention further sales from its PSP and original PlayStation 1 titles.  So far, Microsoft's Xbox 360 has not sold as well as Microsoft expected, mainly as a result of product shortage.

Once Sony does launch its PS3, they will potentially face hefty loses from its sales, mainly due to analysts predicting a cost of $900 per console, which Sony would likely have to heavily subsidise to attract customers.  The high manufacturing costs is due to a combination of its Blu-ray drive and Cell based processor costs.  Also, some analysts reckon that even if Sony launches the PS3 before the Christmas season in the US, it is unlikely going to affect its market share for video games.

Microsoft has failed to capitalize on what could be a significant delay in the launch of the next-generation gaming console from Sony, but Sony probably is not too concerned about a second-half 2006 debut if it comes to pass.

Sony still makes plenty of money on its PlayStation 2 console, with games continuing to debut and sell for the PS2, the Financial Times reported. And the launch of the PlayStation Portable has been welcomed by Sony's global gaming audience.

Like other equipment preparing for launch, the longer Sony takes to launch the PS3, the more improvements that can be made.  Unfortunately for gamers, this means a longer wait, much like those who are waiting for Blu-ray and HD DVD to launch, never mind waiting for prices to come down!  On the other hand, chances are that Playstation 2 consoles and games are likely going to see for another good while, much like how the original Playstation 1 consoles and games continued selling well during the PS2 launch and even until this day.
