Talking TV announced by Ocean Blue

Ocean Blue Software and the U.K. Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) worked together to create a new "Talking TV" that is able to help owners who are visually and hearing impaired or dyslexic enjoy TV content.

Based on a customizable user interface, the set-top box offers text-to-speech capability with multiple languages supported.  The on-screen text ranges from TV program guides to digital displays and menus that can be used by issuing voice commands.  It's also possible to modify font sizes, use higher-contrast color schemes, among other included features.

Blue Ocean said its set-top box is compatible with many TVs, so that isn't an issue that must be dealt with for most owners.

Pricing and availability haven't been released by Blue Ocean.

"We are absolutely thrilled to have been shortlisted for the prestigious award," said Ken Helps, Ocean Blue CEO, after being nominated as an IABM Design Awards Candidate 2009.  "Ocean Blue constantly strives to develop innovative solutions for the digital TV industry, so we are very pleased with the nomination and look forward to the awards ceremony next month at IBC Amsterdam."

I think this kind of technology is absolutely phenomenal, as I believe everyone has the right to enjoy life to the fullest.  Furthermore, it's good to see the RNIB and other similar groups working with researchers to develop these kinds of technologies.
