It's hard not to like TDK's new DVD writer. The 880N not only looks good, it performs well and offers a good number of features. Based on the popular NEC ND-2500A, the 880N is one of the first drives on the market with the ability to write to DVD-R and DVD+R media at 8x. While not the fastest DVD writer we've tested, it was able to write 4GB of data in less than 9 minutes. The 880N's writing quality was also quite good and unlike Memorex's new DVD±RW, it has the ability to write to select 4x DVD±R media at 8x. The drive also performed very well in our rewriting tests. In fact, the 880N had some of the fastest writing times we've seen with both DVD-RW and DVD+RW media

Reading DVD's wasn't a problem for TDK's new DVD±RW drive either. The 880N came close to reaching 12x when reading single layer DVD-ROM's and read DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW media at 8x. Unfortunately, the drive's transfer speeds were limited to only 5x when reading DVD videos. While this doesn't have any affect on playback, there are faster drives out there if you want to make backups of your movie collection.

When it came time to read CD's, the 880N performed as expected. The drive had no problems reading pressed and CD-R media at 40x and CD-RW discs at 33x. It also had some fairly good seek times, no matter what media was used. Unfortunately, the 880N wasn't as fast as some of the other drives in our DAE tests. While most new DVD writers can rip audio CD's at 40x, it reached a maximum DAE speed of only 33x. The 880N's 32x CD-R and 16x CD-RW writing speeds also put it at a slight disadvantage in our writing tests. However, its writing quality was very good.
