Ian from CDRLabs has taken a look at TDK's latest external drive, the TDK veloCD 24/10/40UE that connects to your computer using the USB2.0 interface.
The drive performs very well and comes in a good retail package. Besides that it's 20$ cheaper then Plextor's USB2.0 drive. Here are the highs and lows:
Highs: |
The USB 2.0 interface makes the drive extremely easy to install.
Good data transfer speeds with pressed and CD-R media.
Features Sanyo's BURN-Proof and FlexSS-BP technologies.
Very good looking drive. Small footprint too.
Good DAE speeds.
Includes Ahead Software's Nero Burning Rom 5.5.
Very good retail package. It includes media, software and even a CD labeling pen!
Lows:
Does not read CD-RW discs as fast as pressed or CD-R media.
Has a tendency to slow down when reading pressed audio CD's.
Seek times are higher than other 24x writers.
Fairly loud when reading and writing CD's.
Poor performance when reading scratched and dirty discs.
