The guys over CDRlabs have taken the time again to review another CDRW drive. This time the TDK veloCD is taking the heat of the CDRLabs tests.
The veloCD is able to write at 32 speed, rewrite at 10 speed and read at 40 speed.
It has a 2 MB buffer and the drive has Sanyo's Burnproof and Optimum Power Control technologies on board. The performs very well and gets a 9 out of 10 from the guys at CDRLabs
Part of conclusion: |
TDK's new veloCD has an impressive list of features and performance to match. When it comes to writing, the veloCD 32/10/40 is one of the fastest 32x writers available. Unlike some other 32x writers, TDK's new drive was noticeably faster than even the fastest 24x writers I've tested. But before you run out and buy one of these, you should know that this speed doesn't come without a price. Along with the additional noise from its high rotation speeds, you will probably need to use media rated at 32x with the veloCD. When we tried to use media rated at lower speeds, the results weren't always ideal.
Like other drives based on the Sanyo BP1600P, the veloCD is also a pretty good reader. In most of our tests, TDK's new drive had no problems reading pressed and CD-R media at 40x. When it came to CD-RW media though, it had a maximum speed of only 32x. TDK's drives have always been known for their excellent DAE speeds and the new veloCD 32/10/40 definitely did not disappoint. In our tests it did quite well, reaching 40x most of the time. However, it did not do as well as we would have liked in our scratched and dirty CD tests.
Weak points of the drive are that it is very loud and has pretty high seek rates. Check out the rest of the conclusion, the highs and lows and whole review here.
