Our friends from CDRLabs.com have wrapped up another review. This time they've taken a look at the TDK veloCD 40/12/48 CD-RW drive based on the popular LTR-40125S Lite-On drive:
The veloCD 40/12/48 is TDK's best drive to date. Along with good looks and a long list of features, the veloCD has performance that allows it to go head to head with some of the top 40x writers currently available. TDK's new drive is the fastest 40x Z-CLV writer we've tested so far. The new veloCD was able to complete our writing tests a few seconds faster than both the Lite-On LTR-40125S and TEAC CD-W540E. However, the drive's writing times are still about 20 seconds longer than the 40x P-CAV writers from LG and Sony. The veloCD's media compatibility is also very good. In our writing tests we found that TDK's new drive was able to write at 40x to a variety of media from different manufacturers.
The veloCD 40/12/48 can be found for less than $120 online. While the 40x writers from Lite-On and TEAC can be picked up for considerably less, the veloCD is definitely more consumer friendly. Along with a very good software package, TDK includes not one or two, but a selection of manuals and guides and little extras like an IDE cable and CD labeling marker. If these things are important to you and you can afford to spend a little more, then definitely check out the veloCD 40/12/48.
The TDK veloCD drive gets an overall score of 9. Interested in reading the complete review? You can find it here.
