A great range of big companies has got together and made a new MPEG-4 standard.
The companies are as follows: Apple, Sun, IBM, Cisco og Philips. As you can see, some of those companies have some strong roots in the Unix/Linux community.
One of the good things about this new standard, is that Microsoft and Real Networks are excluded and isn't a part of this.
One of the new things about this format is that it is open, and can widely be used for all purposes.
The first player with this new format included is apple's Quicktime, which by the way is much more convenient than Microsofts media player, atleast in my opinion.
