FutureProof used our news submit to tell us about this study of a Plextor PX-708A over at Tom's hardware. He says it is a good review but maybe not as good as a CD Freaks review. 😉 Yes, I must agree on this one too, but we may be a bit predjudiced.

The race for Xs is still on and Plextor has gone into the lead with the PX-708A, what Plextor claims is the first commercialized 8X DVD recorder. At this speed, a 4.38 GB DVD+R takes under 9 minutes to record. That is about the same as a CD in just over a minute. What we wanted to know was whether the reliability and compatibility of blank supports suffer from this breakneck speed .
Plextor offers a product of excellent quality with the fastest DVD+R write speed to be found at the moment. Its speeds are also the best in DVD+RW, DVD-R and DVD-RW modes. And the CD mode ranks the PX-708A as one of the best...CD recorders! It also has a lead for speed in the + format which will only be reached by the - format in 2004. |
An interesting comparison of seven different DVD 4X +R media is given in the review. Predictably, some will take 8X, such as Maxell and Traxdata, others start at 6X and then change to 4X or else only take 4X. Traxdata had the best theoretical recording time of 7:59 of those tested. Here are the complete results of the DVD media test.
