While at the Ritek booth I met up with some representatives and asked a few questions about this nice little Optical disc recorder they willl soon be offering. The Ridata TOPY Photocopier is a voice, music and data recorder, that has been designed to utilise a very small DataPlay mini CD. From just looking at the cartridge held discs, I would say they are about the size of a 25 cent piece. So possibly from that you can get the idea how small the recorder is. There will be two discs available, 500 megabyte and then also a 1 gigabyte version. These are re-writable discs and we were told that they will have a MSRP of 4 dollars and 8 dollars respectively. According to their press release these little guys can archive data for 100 years!
The plug-and-play USB 2.0 port enables you to transfer data at a very acceptable speed for these capacities. The little recorder handles MP3/WMA and WAV music files. The TOPY Photocopier also features a SD/MMC/Memory Stick slot, handy to unload those expensive memory cards from your camera while on vacation.
According to the placard at the display, this is the smallest optical data recorder to date in the world. To top off a list of features the unit will have line in recording/voice recording and sports a very clear to read two color OLED display. You can't see it as the unit was turned off but the OLED glows from beneath the upper left hand corner of the recorder. Unfortunately, when asked what the battery life was, they were unable to give us that information.
We were told that the MSRP for this device will be less than 50 dollars US. Apparently, some thought has been given to bundling the player with media, and to sell for less than 100 dollars. They are very nice looking and the pictures do not do them justice as we were shooting through a plexiglass display case.
