Toshiba introduces the world's first 1.8-inch dual platter hard drive disk with a storage capacity of 240GB. The new HDD is designed for mobile PCs, Portable Multimedia Players and camcorders and has two brothers offering respectively 80GB and 120GB. All drives provide a rational speed of 4,200rpm.
The 120GB version already is in mass production, while the 80GB and 240GB version will enter mass production this month. All capacities use a new mechanical and firmware design for enhanced durability making the 80GB and 120GB single-platter HDDs good for use in mobile gadgets and PC applications. The dual-platter 240GB HDD suites high-end camcorders and mobile applications in need of high capacity and high shock resistance.
Of course the company's press release ends with the announcement that the 240GB HDD reduces energy use with 33% compared to the company's previous generation (160GB) 1.8-inch HDDs.
