Toshiba kicked off the week by announcing its Canvio Portable Hard Drive product, a new external drive with a maximum storage capacity of 1TB.
The drive uses a single USB 2.0 port for both data transfers and providing power, which makes the device easy to connect, with just one cable required.
The Canvio 1TB drive measures 3.1-inches (W) x 4.7-inches (L) x 0.63 (D), and weighs just 6.3 ounces. The drive can be easily stored in a laptop case, backpack, or simply carried to multiple destinations.
USB 3.0 is picking up speed, but is still seen as a technology of the future. Even so, I'm still disappointed USB 3.0 won't be included with the Canvio, as it's a significantly faster data transfer standard.
Using the included NTI BackupNow EZ software, owners can automatically backup data without physically telling the HDD to do so. Lost files can be located using a simple process based on the company's BackupNow EZ software, Toshiba said in a press statement.
Toshiba will ship the HDD with different versions containing storage capacities of 500GB, 640GB, 750GB, and 1TB.
HDDs can top 2TB nowadays and the storage capacity of portable devices continues to increase at a rapid pace. Compact, portable storage devices allow users to easily transport their information from location to location with ease.
HDDs face continued pressure from the more expensive, reliable solid state drive storage alternative. SSDs normally have smaller storage capacities compared to HDDs, but they're much faster. Even so, consumers seem to be willing to wait for SSD prices to fall further before adopting the technology.
