CDRlabs took a look at the Toshiba SDM1612 DVD-ROM drive. The drive performs very good reading CD-RW discs and it also reads pressed and CD-R discs without any problem. Here is a part of the conclusion:

Very fast CD-RW read speeds. One of the fastest CD-RW readers around.
Supports most DVD and CD formats.
Can read DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD-RAM discs.
Fast speeds for when reading data DVD's.
Pretty good transfer speeds for pressed and CD-R discs. Good choice as a CD-ROM replacement.
DAE speeds are a big improvement over older models.
Lows:
Slow DVD movie read speeds.
DAE quality is questionable. Created errors in our CD DAE tests.
No headphone jack and volume control on front of drive
